Child Proof Your House

Having a baby is no easy task, and to take care of them is the hardest. There always seems to be so many things to take care of, and so many new things to worry about. Babies have the uncanny ability to find trouble (no wonder all the Famous Five and Secret Seven series had children seeking trouble – it comes naturally to them, you see).

A child below the age of 4 will be spending over 80% of his/her time at home. While the world outside pose significant dangers to any child, do not underestimate the possible risks at your home as well. While it is difficult to succinctly address all these challenges, here is an overview on the most common challenges, and how you should deal with them.

Window safety

You cannot end up barricading all your windows just because you have a child. You need to have a natural circulation of ventilation and light. However, you can take steps to mitigate accidents that can occur owing to windows. Consider installing grills so that your child will not be able to jump out or fall out through the window. Keep his/her cot away from the window as well. This can prevent unwanted exposure to rain, sun, etc.

In case a window is broken, take immediate steps for glass repair. Broken windows can result in injuries or the child having unwarranted access to go outside.

Since broken windows can be a common occurrence in case you have other children as well, it is always quite handy to keep a number of a glass repair service who can attend to the task as soon as possible.

Prevent the falls

Children fall, all the time. In fact, there is no learning without falling. However, some falls can prove quite dangerous and it is these falls that you should avoid. For example, most kids tend to have accidents when using the stair case. This is especially so when they are just starting to walk. It is always advisable to install baby gates at the top and the bottom of the staircase to prevent the child from using the stairs unattended.

Yet another example is where children fall out of their beds. Try to get a bed that is not too far above the ground. And it is always a wise option to place soft carpets around the bed to mitigate any possible damage.

Keep medicine out of reach

Kids try to imitate their elders all the time. Be it using make up or dressing up as adults. However, this can be quite dangerous if they see you taking some pills. It needs to be understood that pills and medicine comes in all different shapes and colours, thereby attracting many kids with the natural misconception that they are candy. Hence, it is always a wise option to keep the medicine far out of reach from them, and to take them when they are not present.
